The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde published in 1890.

This is the 13-Chapter version of the story.

The story opens on a summer day in Victorian England with artist Basil Hallward painting a portrait of his muse, the handsome Dorian Gray, as Lord Henry Wotton looks on. Dorian hears Lord Henry speaking of his pleasure-seeking, self-indulgent approach to life and wonders if beauty is the main thing to be sought after in life. Dorian wishes that the painting is made of him will age while he does not. His exposure to Lord Henry encourages Dorian to examine the sensual side of life. He meets Sibyl Vane, an actress at a run-down theater. Sibyl is drawn to Dorian, whom she refers to as Prince Charming, and he asks her to marry him. Her brother James warns Dorian that if he hurts her, he will kill him.
